Reishi Mushroom: Immunity, Stress Relief and Anti-Inflammatory Benefits

A staple in eastern medicine, Reishi is known as the ‘Queen of mushrooms’ or ‘the mushroom of immortality’ because of its many health benefits. Science is finally catching up, with many evidence-based studies supporting Reishi’s medicinal properties.

Benefits of Reishi mushrooms for health and well-being

Also known as Ganoderma lucidum or G. lucidum in the scientific community, Reishi (or Lingzhi) is used to increase energy, boost the immune system, fight allergies, increase strength and stamina, lower cholesterol, and improve the body’s stress response.

Reishi mushrooms are typically ear- or kidney-shaped with a distinctive rust color (red, orange, and brown). Though they’re mostly grown commercially now, you would find them growing in the wild on hardwood trees like oak and maple. Reishi comes in various formats, from tea to tinctures, extract powders, capsules, and even food products. Most people prefer to take it as an extract or tea due to the mushroom’s woody texture and bitter taste.

Powdered forms or extracts are most commonly used in traditional or alternative medicine and have been used for thousands of years in Asia to promote longevity and wellbeing. The rest of the world is gradually recognizing its potent medicinal benefits.

The benefits of Reishi mushrooms according to science

Reishi mushrooms are adaptogens, which means they help the body adapt to and cope with various types of stress. As an adaptogen, Reishi supports adrenal gland function and positively impacts mental health – relieving stress and anxiety, and alleviating fatigue.

In this double-blind and placebo-controlled study, 132 patients with neurasthenia (characterized by physical and mental exhaustion) treated with a polysaccharide extract from Reishi showed significant improvement in their well-being and reduced fatigue.

Many of Reishi’s health benefits are attributed to triterpenoid compounds. These bioactive polysaccharides have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antitumor effects. In a 2010 study, Ganoderic acid T (a triterpene compound) inhibited cancer cell development and tumor metastasis.

Researchers believe beta-glucans in Reishi mushrooms are powerful antioxidants, reducing oxidative stress and aiding in cardiovascular health. Both triterpenes and beta-glucans are cholesterol-lowering compounds that may also help lower blood pressure.

In a clinical study with angina patients, those treated with 750 mg per day of Reishi extract for three months showed decreased oxidative radicals and improved atherosclerosis.

The powerful healing properties of Reishi

A strong immune system is essential for health, and one of Reishi's most praised benefits is immune support. Reishi mushrooms strengthen and balance immune function, potentially helping to prevent and fight infections. Reishi also reduces inflammation, which plays a role in the immune response.

Inflammation is the body's response to injuries or infections, but chronic inflammation is a major health concern. Worldwide, 3 out of 5 people die from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, heart disorders, cancer, and diabetes. Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract, was significantly improved in children with Reishi treatment, according to this study on its anti-inflammatory effects.

Reishi is also a natural antihistamine, with compounds that help treat allergic responses such as asthma. This study found that Reishi could reduce histamine-mediated immune responses, providing a safe alternative for allergy management.

Beyond immune support, Reishi extract has hepatoprotective properties, meaning it protects the liver. The triterpenes in Reishi promote liver cell regeneration, vital for detoxification and blood purification.

The fungi of immortality?

Calling it “the mushroom of immortality” might be an exaggeration, but there’s something to be said for feeling rejuvenated. Studies on Reishi’s potential to fight disease and support health are ongoing. Try adding one teaspoon of Reishi extract to your tea or coffee twice a day and experience its effects for yourself.
